Most Bulgarian goods and services are, if not dirt-cheap, then eminently affordable
for people with Western incomes or savings.
Supermarket prices are perhaps between a third and a half of their West European
equivalents and compare favourably with Greece, Turkey, Spain or the Czech Republic.
Dining, going out and entertaining in Bulgaria are about 5 times cheaper than in Western Europe.
Taxis and public transport are roughly equally pricey which means they are 10 times or so
cheaper than in cities such as London.
A midday restaurant meal for two: €5
A business dinner for four at a top flight restaurant: €100;
Public transport - a single ticket for €0.20
Taxis in Sofia - Airport to city centre - €3-€4
Cinema tickets - €2-3
Best opera/ballet seats - €10 / middle range - €3
Latest inflation rates - -0.4 per cent. year-on-year in July 2003 (Bulgarian National Statistics Institute, www.nsi.bg).
