Most Bulgarian goods and services are, if not dirt-cheap, then eminently affordable for people with Western incomes or savings. Supermarket prices are perhaps between a third and a half of their West European equivalents and compare favourably with Greece, Turkey, Spain or the Czech Republic. Dining, going out and entertaining in Bulgaria are about 5 times cheaper than in Western Europe. Taxis and public transport are roughly equally pricey which means they are 10 times or so cheaper than in cities such as London. Latest inflation rates - -0.4 per cent. year-on-year in July 2003 (Bulgarian National Statistics Institute, www.nsi.bg).
