Getting around in-country

By train
Travelling by train in Bulgaria is very cheap and quite comfortable.
The rail network is as well developed as elsewhere in Southern and Eastern Europe.
Be warned however that train journeys take much longer than may be
expected and are sometimes slower than trips by coach.
The Bulgarian national railway company maintains a web page.
There is timetable and pricing information, a lot of additional detail but no facilities for online booking.
Bulgarian State Railways
By air
Internal scheduled flights cover the routes between Sofia and Varna, Bourgas, Plovdiv and Rousse
respectively.
The largest internal carrier is Hemus Air
Number for reservations: +359(0) 2
Private propeller craft companies and helicopters are available for chartering or hire.
Sofia Air is one of the bigger charterers.
Overland - By road
There are several motorway-style roads (connecting the Coast and the South with Sofia),
with the remainder - similar to dual carriageways.
Services are dotted frequently along the roads and as elsewhere in Eastern Europe,
are often of a higher quality having been built by international companies quite recently.
Petrol/Gasoline is cheap (At the time of last updating of this page, November 2003 - about 75 Euro cents (50 pence) per litre.
Motels and road-side hotels are not as frequent or salubrious as could be wished.
In small towns and villages lying near the road, though,
there is plentiful provision for tourists which you may use.
Hiring a car is easy and can be done in advance. The locations from which rental companies operate tend to be
in larger towns and cities or near international airports.
