Bulgaria has four clear-cut seasons. Its summer is hot but rarely sweltering, in winter there is abundant snow and the spring and autumn are beautiful transitional periods. There are of course regional variations in the climate: the North, before the Balkans, is wetter and more similar to Central Europe; the South West and South East are marine or Mediterranean and have mild winters. There are never droughts, but rain falls usually in more concentrated bursts than it does in the British Isles. There are depending on the location a minimum of 250 sunny days a year. The duration of the daylight hours is more constant than through the seasons and days are not as short as they are in London or Edinburgh in winter.
